The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is offering scholarships to excellent non-EEA/non-EFTA students involved in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University.

Areas of study: All full-time Master’s programs at Leiden University with the exception of LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School are offered.

Number of Awards: The number and type of awards for the scholarship are based on the budget available for each Faculty department.

Target group: Non-EEA/non-EFTA* natives are the target group.

Scholarship grants/value: The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program has 3 awards or grants:

€ 10.000 of the tuition fee
          € 15.000 of the tuition fee
          Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee

  • The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS students must submit ‘proof of sufficient funds for their student visa application.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The previous education records of the students must be excellent and this should be relevant to the Master’s program for which they are applying. They must be amongst the top 10% of graduates in their previous academic programs.
  • Candidates must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport.
  • *All EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland)

Application details:

  • The candidate must first apply online for a Master’s program at Leiden University. In his/her application, he/she must indicate clearly that he/she would like to apply for the LExS scholarship in the scholarship section and upload a letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship.
  • The last date to apply for programs starting in September is 1 February while programs starting in February have a last date of 1 October.
  • The candidate must visit the official website for detailed information regarding how to apply for this scholarship.
